Abstract:
To explore the impact of internal migration on crime, we analyze the effect of China’s 2014 Hukou reform on crime rates. The negative impact of the policy on local governments’ public welfare spending and local residents’ overall experience serves as an important channel leading to the increase in crime rates.
Guest Bio:
Shi Xinzheng, a professor at the School of Economics at Peking University, specializes in labor economics and development economics. He has been selected for the National Youth Talent Program and currently serves as the associate editor for Economic Development and Cultural Change and the Economics Journal. He has published over 50 papers in journals such as the Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Development Economics, Economic Research Journal, Economic Quarterly, and Management World. He has also led multiple national-level projects.
