Chinese Outward Direct Investment (ODI): Determinants and Case Studies
Abstract: In 2014, Chinese ODI surpassed inward investment in China for the first time. In this study, we will explore the strategy of quasi systematic purchase by Chinese (very often state owned backed) investors of assets in distressed European Union countries such as Italy, in the light of other recent Chinese investments in North America such as the US and Canada. This research will focus on Chinese firms' investment strategy in the above countries and host country government FDI policies in response to this trend within the background of larger regional markets. This research is based on the hypothesis that there are inevitably gaps to apply Eclectic Paradigm (Dunning, 1981, 2001) to China as emerging economy investors, and the ODI of Chinese firms have a number of features that require more consideration. In addition, a comparative study on Chinese investment strategy in different industrial sectors and different regional markets will be discussed.
