Professors ZHAO Yaohui and YANG Mian Selected for 2024 "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers" List

On March 25, 2025, Elsevier officially released the 2024 "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers" list. Wuhan University had a total of 116 scholars selected this time, including three faculty members and students from our school, showing a steady increase in the number of honorees. Among them, Professors Yaohui Zhao and Mian Yang were recognized as highly cited researchers, demonstrating outstanding performance in the humanities and social sciences fields.


Introduction to Professor ZHAO Yaohui



Zhao Yaohui is a professor at the Dongfu Chen Institute of Economic and Social Development at Wuhan University, an adjunct professor at the School of Economics and Management at Wuhan University, and an adjunct professor at the National School of Development at Peking University. She is also a recipient of China's National High-Level Talent Program. In 1981, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Economics from Peking University, followed by a Master's degree in Economics from Peking University in 1987, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1995. Her research focuses on labor economics, population economics, and health economics. She has published over a hundred papers in both Chinese and English academic journals, with his work cited more than 16,000 times on Google Scholar. She has been consistently listed on Elsevier's China Highly Cited Scholars rankings in Economics, Econometrics, and Finance and has been included in Stanford University's World's Top 2% Scientists list for both career-long and annual impact. Zhao Yaohui serves on the International Advisory Committee for several globally renowned health and aging research projects and holds the position of Associate Editor for two international English-language academic journals. She is also Vice President of the Labor Economics Society and Director of the Health and Elderly Care Division of the China Labor Studies Association. Since 2007, Zhao Yaohui has led the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Over more than a decade of development, the CHARLS database has become one of the most influential datasets for studying aging issues in China, making significant contributions to talent development and academic research in the fields of health and population aging in China.


Introduction to Professor YANG Mian


Yang Mian is a Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at the School of Economics and Management, Wuhan University, where he also serves as the Director of the Institute of Economics. He has been selected for the National Youth Talent Program. His long-term research focuses on the green and low-carbon transformation of economic development, as well as the optimization of energy and low-carbon economic policies. As the first author or corresponding author, he has published over 80 papers in prestigious journals such as Social Sciences in China, Economic Research Journal, The World Economy, China Industrial Economics, Statistical Research, Public Choice, The Energy Journal, European Journal of Operational Research, China Economic Review, and Energy Economics. He has been recognized as a Top 2% Most-Cited Scientist globally and named among Elsevier's Highly Cited Chinese Researchers. He has led one Key Project of the National Social Science Fund, four projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and three sub-projects of Major Projects under the National Social Science Fund. His policy advisory reports have received positive feedback and endorsements from multiple senior national leaders. Additionally, he serves as an editorial board member for journals such as Journal of China University of Geosciences (Social Sciences Edition), Coal Economic Research, and Resources & Industries, and holds the position of Executive Director of the China Urban Economics Association.


The "Highly Cited Chinese Researchers" list utilizes Scopus, a globally authoritative citation and indexing database, as the statistical source for tracking the research output of Chinese scholars. The methodology, developed by Shanghai Rank Consultancy, has been jointly implemented for the eleventh time by 2025.


In the 2024 edition, a total of 6,388 scholars were recognized on the list, hailing from 547 universities, enterprises, and research institutions. The list spans 10 major disciplinary fields and 83 first-level disciplines as classified by the Ministry of Education.
