内容摘要：Transportation infrastructure is often mentioned as a key to promoting growth and development. This paper examines the effects of accessing the national expressway on firms’exports in China during its fourteen years (2000–2013) of rapid growth. I apply an event study approach by using firm-product-destination country-year level data. As well, I address the endogenous placement of networks by exploiting the Ming Dynasty’s official road network as an instrument. The preliminary results show that proximity to the expressway network has large-scale positive causal effects on export amounts, negative effects on export prices, and insignificant effects on export revenues. The effects also vary across sectors, ownership, and districts. The results can be interpreted according to the firms’efficiency improvement and effective resource reallocation, while the explanation from the extensive marginal effects is weak. The findings provide a more comprehensive understanding of the international trade impacts created by the national expressway network in China.
