讲座主题：Hospital Choice by Uninformed Patients

讲座提要：Patient hospital choices have attracted a lot of research attention. Past studies have shown that patients tend to choose hospitals with short distances and high quality. However, most of these studies utilize the settings in developed countries where patients choose hospitals after consulting general practitioners–patients make informed choices. We utilize a unique setting in China, where patients directly go to a hospital without the support of general practitioners. This project aims to model how self-judgment of health status, financial constraints, and preferences over hospital characteristics jointly determine patients’ hospital choices. Utilizing patients’ transfers between hospitals, we can estimate the relative importance of misjudgment of medical conditions, and patients’ elasticity to healthcare prices. We also conduct counterfactual analyses to measure the welfare implication of alleviating information asymmetry.

主讲人简介：袁鸿杰，武汉大学经济与管理学院助理教授。2016年于香港大学获得经济金融学学士学位，2020年获得香港大学经管学院博士学位。主要研究领域为中国经济与商业、健康经济学、产业组织与结构。主要关注中国特色经济制度、医疗需求和供给、以及竞争环境研究。
